A proposed Republican spending bill includes a slate of D.C.-specific provisions, including one that would prohibit the city from enforcing a new law to ban right turns on red lights by drivers.

Republicans lambasted the D.C. Council as “radical” for passing a bill that allows non-citizens to vote and another that overhaul’s the city’s criminal code.

Senate Democrats concede that they face an uphill battle in pushing D.C. statehood over the next two years, largely because of Republican control of the House of Representatives.

Any bill passed by the D.C. Council has to go to Congress for a 30-day review period before becoming law. But without a Speaker of the House, there’s nowhere for the pending bills to be sent.

“They don’t like who we are, they don’t like what we believe, and they don’t like how we vote,” says one D.C. statehood activist who foresees a difficult two years if Republicans take back the U.S. House.

Car dealerships didn’t make it into the debate, but one GOP senator proposed that D.C. residents are too wealthy to grant the city statehood.

The Democratic senator’s opposition to the current D.C. statehood bill likely kills its chances in the Senate, where it was already facing stiff odds because of the filibuster.

But there’s still a bumpy road ahead: Not all 50 of the Senate Democrats are yet on board.

Democrats have coalesced around the idea of making D.C. the 51st state, and they recently picked up a high-profile supporter: President Joe Biden.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
