Concert Preview: Donnie @ The Black Cat
Atlanta-based singer Donnie first made himself known around 2001 with the release of two tracks, “Do You Know?” and “Our New National Anthem.” The former song sounded very reminiscent of “Flying Easy,” which was performed by one of Donnie’s influences, Donny Hathaway. Besides Hathaway, it was evident on the 2002 album, The Colored Section, that Donnie’s sound was also derived from Stevie Wonder and the gospel music he was exposed to by his preacher parents….

Two D.C. Area Students Shot at Delaware State
In the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech earlier this year, it’s been reported all over the world today that two 17-year-old students were shot in an incident at Delaware State University last night. Both students, a male and a female whose names have not been released, were originally from the Washington, D.C. area. The male student is in stable condition, but the female’s injuries are listed as serious. The campus remained locked-down today…

District Hires High-Priced Librarian
Last week we reported that D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams takes in $152,000 in compensation, a salary some viewed as excessive and others as not excessive enough. But if this is how much we currently judge the city’s chief executive to be worth, what would we pay, let’s say, the chief librarian? A lot more, as news has it. The Common Denominator reported on Friday that the D.C. Board of Library Trustees decided to hire Ginnie…

Morning Roundup: Live Blogging Edition
Whoops. A little snafu in the DCist newsroom has thus far left us without our daily news roundup. Given that no good day starts without a general overview of the news, we’re turning an omission into an opportunity — we’re going to live-blog today’s roundup. So, stay tuned. Every few minutes or so we’ll have an update. Update: Let’s see what the Post has to offer this morning. Some minor election in Virginia seems to…

Chinatown’s Gate to Be One-Upped
From Curbed (now sponsored by nytimes.com/realestate …), we learn that New York City will be soon trumping the nation’s capital on yet another thing of cultural importance: a large Chinese arch. D.C.’s Chinese Friendship Gate, which arches over H Street at Seventh Street NW, is said to be the largest such arch on earth. But through the Daily News, we learn that the proposed New York arch will be the largest anywhere. And since…

MSMerisms
We hate use of the term MSM, or for those not familiar with blogger speak, the “main-stream media.” It’s not that the acronym or the definition itself annoys us — it is accurate — but the use of MSM as of late suggests that there is some concrete line in the sand between journalism and blogging that will always be firmly in place. The use of MSM suggests that in the evolving media, there will…

Twin Watch: Jenna’s Still Looking
First Matt Damon dumps Minnie Driver on Oprah, and now Laura Bush goes on ABC’s “Good Morning America” to gossip about daughter Jenna’s new flame? The NY Daily News picked up on some comments that the first lady made to GMA host Charlie Gibson, regarding Jenna’s new BF Henry Hager. Take heart you good looking, rich, single, male Republicans! Apparently, Hager isn’t a “serious” boyfriend, and it seems Jenna’s still on the prowl. Despite Hager’s…

So What’s Jenna’s Next Move?
As Rush and Molloy reported yesterday in the NY Daily News, Jenna Bush and a group of friends were supposedly rejected from renting a house in Cleveland Park, a house belonging to The New York Times’ Paris bureau chief. This makes us think that Jenna is realizing that Georgetown may not be the best bet for housing. Perhaps she even read our post from last week about her potential tough commute between Georgetown and Columbia…

Woodley Park Crash Reverberates in NYC
Last week’s Red Line train crash at Woodley Park is sending transit shockwaves all the way to New York. Gothamist reports that a Metropolitan Transportation Authority union is using the metrorail crash in D.C. as a talking point against the MTA converting the L train/14th St.-Canarsie Line to full computerized automation. The union contends that because the metrorail system in D.C. is automated, there is an increased risk of mishaps underground. But we think the…
