Morning Roundup: No Snow Edition

Today will be mostly cloudy with highs around 40 and a chance of snow showers. The photo is by John W. via Flickr. Snow Storm Falls Short Predictions: The area papers noted yesterday’s storm fell short predictions, but closed schools in the area, to the frustration of parents. WTOP notes the snowfall set a record at Dulles Airport. Indian Lobbying Up: The Examiner reports that lobbying expenditures by Native American tribes is up recently. They…

D.C. Council Bans Trains Carrying Hazardous Material

The D.C. Council passed legislation today that bans trains carrying hazardous materials from traveling through the District. This from GovExec.com: The legislation — introduced by Councilwoman Kathy Patterson, D-Ward 3–requires rail and trucking companies to get a special permit before they can transport large quantities of extremely hazardous chemicals, such as chlorine or propane, through the nation’s capital. Several council members have said the legislation was needed because the Homeland Security Department refused to order…

Defending the Adams Morgan ‘Riots’

The self-described revolutionary anarchists who marched through Adams Morgan last week toward an Inauguration party at the Washington Hilton — leaving a bit of damage in their wake — are defending their actions in an open letter posted on DC Indymedia. They’re a bit peeved over the criticism directed their way since the sort-of riot, sort-of rout. As D.C. residents and organizers whose politics are rooted in an opposition to both capitalism, the state and…

The seven plantiffs, including Adam Eidinger, his wife Alexis Baden-Mayer and her father Joe Mayer, will receive $48,000 each and a letter of apology from Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Charles Ramsey. (The photo is…

‘Million’ Workers March on Lincoln Mem’l

The self-described Million Worker March was today at the Lincoln Memorial. The group’s demands included a broad array of progressive issues, focusing in particular on ending the Iraq war, and demanding health care and housing for all. WTOP reports attendence seemed less than expected at what they describe as a “decidely anti-President Bush” rally at the Lincoln Memorial. Yahoo News has some photos, and we assume DC Indymedia will have photos and information from the…

Pandas With Attitude

The members of Up Close and Political, a D.C.-based photography collective, thought it would be a good idea if the pandas spread around town last summer had political opinions. The result of their speculation was a series of photos, available on their website, of the pandas holding political posters critical of the Bush administration. The posters they created will be on display for one week at Café Mawonaj (Operated by the Vox Union) at 624…

More on the Spyblimp

A mysterious Department of Defense blimp spotted hovering over D.C. may or may not be related to a creepy-sounding DARPA spy project. The blimp is seen here in one photo posted to DC Indymedia A Wired article from last March describes a DARPA project to design a large blimp three times the size of the Goodyear blimp called ISIS that would use a flexible radar antenna to monitor movement over an entire city: ‘We will…

D.C. Police Up to No Good

D.C. police have been in a touch of hot water lately. First, DC Indymedia reports on some discontent from police conduct during Adams Morgan Day on Sept. 12. Apparently a man calling himself “Mr. Care” was harrassed by a police officer upset with his anti-Bush signs, which our Indymedia friends helpfully post online. Second, a federal judge has ruled that Police Chief Charles Ramsey and his assistant could be held liable for the illegal mass…
