Sitting as a western bookend of the National Mall and the first sight a driver will see while crossing the Memorial Bridge, the Lincoln Memorial may be one of the city’s most iconic monuments. Today, it celebrates its 90th birthday.

It was on this day 127 years ago that the Washington Monument was dedicated.

The first time they tried to inaugurate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, they got a hurricane. This time, it’s looking like a soggy week will give way to a sunny weekend.

Last week, we reported that District residents would be the first people to officially get to visit the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial during a D.C. Residents Day. But now, Washingtonians will have to share that honor with suburbanites and anyone else who shows up.

The new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in West Potomac Park might not be officially dedicated until August 28, but District residents will get the chance to fix their gaze upon it earlier than that.
