Stare DCisis: Frozen Assets and Futile Arguments
Editor’s Note: Last year, law student extraordinaire and DCist intern Judy Coleman explored some important U.S. Supreme Court cases and their impact on the District in a feature known as Stare DCisis. This year we’re happy to have her back as something of a legal correspondent and, hopefully, pro bono lawyer. Over the summer she’ll be reporting on important legal issues and, consequently, making the rest of us look like dunces. This DCist keeps some…

Fish Frozen in Time
We wanted to love Crisfield Seafood Restaurant. The blue cinder-block walls, the long, ’40s-style U-shaped counter, the oyster plate and beer stein collection, the fading glamour shots of Jimmy Buffett, Dennis Hastert, and Arch Campbell. Owned and operated by the Landis family since 1945. It all called out to us like a siren song from the industrial semi-wasteland of this part of Georgia Avenue. Crisfield, which celebrates 60 years as a Silver Spring institution this…

Opinionist: DC Christmas Tree Controversy
On Sundays, DCist publishes opinion pieces about life in D.C. The opinions below belong entirely to the author, who, in this case, is reader Timothy Ebner. To add your opinion to the fray, please email me. Leave it to our Capitol City to make politics out of the holiday season. Apparently political correctness now goes as far as Christmas trees or should I say Holiday trees? This year House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) wrote…

Davis Chosen to Lead Katrina Panel
Hoping to diffuse controversy over a special Congressional panel charged with investigating the federal government’s shortcomings in the response to Hurricane Katrina, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert has tapped local Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) to be the panel’s leader. The panel has been a flashpoint of debate in recent days, with Congressional Democrats claiming it would “whitewash” what have come to be perceived as substantial failures in the federal response to the storm and…

The Coming Blue Revolution?
It may be a first, but it’s a first that District voting rights activists have been waiting for and one which they are sure to celebrate — an international endorsement of their cause. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a 55-member regional security organization, is holding its annual meeting in Washington starting tomorrow, during which they plan on considering a resolution that expressly calls for the U.S. government to grant residents of the…

Capitol Tree Lighting
You can never have too many Christmas trees. The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree is being lit today on the West Front Lawn of the Capitol. The U.S. Air Force band will perform and House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), will light the U.S. Capitol Holiday Tree tonight. The White House already has their tree up, but DCist thinks it’s a bit garish compared to the tastefulness of the Capitol tree. In fact, we urge any and…

Out and About: Hump Day
We swear to God, D.C. is the only town where every main street looks like a ghost town during the nights when prez and vice prez debates take place. You know what? You deserve a night out if you watched that entire snoozefest on C-SPAN yesterday evening. Have at it: The bluesy-rock act the Black Keys hit up the 9:30 Club. The Hill’s Third Annual Political Book Fair takes place at Trover Shop, 221 Pennsylvania…

Hilton on the Hill?
(From DCist contributor Kanishka Gangopadhyay) It seems that D.C. has had two reality show-related rumors in the last week. First, the rumors of the Real World coming to D.C. began circulating again thanks to an E! column, but they were quickly debunked. Now, Roll Call reports (website access is for subscribers only) that Fox producers have approached congressional leaders in an effort to procure internships for Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, stars of the networks…
