“I am simply done with excuses,” labor committee chairperson Elissa Silverman said to kick off an oversight hearing Wednesday.
It’s unclear when the new benefits will kick in, due to federal regulations and administrative costs.
District officials elaborated more on the allegations this week that as many as many as 150 current and former city employees allegedly drew unemployment insurance payments at the same time they earned their regular salaries.

District Unemployment Back Up at 9.9 Percent
The Department of Employment Services released the latest jobs figures this morning, and despite last month’s modest improvement, things are once again looking worse. The April unemployment rate for the District of Columbia was 9.9 percent, up 0.2 percent from the March 2009 rate and the exact same as the February 2009 rate.
