Master stonemasons are still working to repair the damage caused by a rare earthquake that hit the city in 2011.
Today, we’re celebrating the two-year anniversary of the Great East Coast Earthquake of 2011 by having DCist staff and contributors recount where they were when the quake hit and how their lives were changed forever.
The earthquake did about $26 million in damage to the historic Cathedral, Andrew Hullinger, senior director of finance and administration, told a group of reporters standing on construction scaffolding dubbed the “dance floor” 60 feet above the worship area.

Washington Monument Will Be Lighted Monday Night
National Park Service officials say the lighting job will give the obelisk a glow-in-the-dark effect.
The scaffolding around the Washington Monument won’t be illuminated tonight, despite a tweet from National Park Service to the contrary.
The covering on the Washington Monument is nearly complete, clearing the way for the stonework to begin.
