Metro ceremonially broke ground to redevelop its Bladensburg bus garage. It’s part of a project that aims to modernize and replace bus facilities around the city that are 61, 87, and 117 years old.

“You are hurting us and you need to know you are hurting this community,” Esther Williams Yarborough said in a recorded message to the Metro board on Thursday.

The vehicles won’t produce any tailpipe emissions and are much quieter than diesel buses.

The Alexandria Transit Company plans to purchase six battery-electric buses by the fall.
