Neighbors had been protesting for years to keep diesel buses out of the new facility.

The county’s shift to a solar-powered bus fleet is aimed at helping Montgomery County meet its ambitious climate action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2027.

The board approved plans Thursday to have as many as 12 electric buses hitting the streets by 2023 as part of a pilot phase.

The plan will start with 25 new electric school buses this fall.
