Asian elephants Trong Nhi and Nhi Linh came from the Rotterdam Zoo, and zookeepers plan to breed them with the National Zoo’s male elephant, Spike.

Say hello to Kamala, Swarna and Maharani.

Kamala, Swarna, and Maharani will arrive in D.C. next year on loan from the Calgary Zoo, thanks to a $2 million donation from Bethesda-based financier and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein.

After spending a month in quarantine, Bozie the Asian elephant has joined her herdmates at the National Zoo and is now on display to the public.

Performers and animals from the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus made their “Pachyderm Parade” across Capitol Hill last night.

At 8 p.m. this evening, a herd of elephants will trudge across Capitol Hill. Why? The circus is in town.

The National Zoo bathes its three Asian elephants on a daily basis, and today it did something a little different: it live-tweeted the whole thing.

Today PETA filed a complaint with the D.C. Office of Campaign Finance accusing Mayor Vince Gray’s office of violating conflict-of-interest rules by accepting discounted circus tickets while failing to inspect the conditions elephants were kept in.

Just like it did last year, PETA is planning a protest of the arrival of the circus to the Verizon Center, an annual event that kicked off last night with the Pachyderm Parade.
