For those of us who follow local media commentary, today’s a big day — Erik Wemple, formerly of Washington City Paper and TBD (both outlets where he was not shy about criticizing his current employer), launched his Washington Post blog last night.

TBD Editor Erik Wemple is taking his talents to the Washington Post. POLITICO reports this afternoon that Wemple — who really raked the Post over the coals during his tenure as editor of the Washington City Paper — will be the paper’s newest media beat reporter.

Report: Brady Out, Wemple Promoted At TBD

UPDATE (7:20 p.m.): “Everyone here is saddened about this,” Wemple told DCist via email this evening. “Jim is not only the ultimate web guy but the ultimate colleague. So that’s pretty much where we are right now. … Exactly how we’re going to do the work that Jim has done is something we’re going to have to sort out as time goes on. We’ll miss him.”

Erik Wemple to Leave City Paper for Allbritton

Washington City Paper Editor-in-Chief Erik Wemple Erik Wemple, editor-in-chief of the Washington City Paper, is leaving the alt-weekly for higher ground, City Desk reports. Wemple’s been tapped to lead a new, all-local online venture planned by Robert Allbritton, the brain behind the Capitol Hill upstart newspaper Politico and owner of local ABC affiliate WJLA and News Channel 8. Convention Center Gets New Name

The Washington Business Journal reported yesterday that the Washington Convention Center will be officially renamed to honor D.C.’s first elected mayor, Walter E. Washington. Apparently the D.C. Council approved the name change last year, though we can’t recall having heard about it at the time. The idea is a fine one though, and Washington is certainly worthy of having his legacy honored. Washington City Paper Sold to Creative Loafing

Via Editor & Publisher, the Washington City Paper, along with the Chicago Reader, which the City Paper owns, has been sold to Atlanta-based company Creative Loafing, publisher of four other alternative weeklies in Atlanta, Tampa, Sarasota, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C. The City Paper name will remain in place, despite the other four papers all carrying the “Creative Loafing” name.
