This Weekend in Sports

The Wizards and Capitals are on summer vacation. The only Redskins news prominently features Ron Mexico and is not related to sports at all (well, human sports anyway). Despite these non-developments, this weekend has some intriguing aspects regarding actual Washington sports. >> Boxing comes to the District as the brothers Peterson square off in co-featured bouts at the D.C. Armory. Lamont and Anthony Peterson are a combined 42-0 with 25 knockouts between them. Anthony will…

Friday Sports Notes

>>The votes are in and as of now, it looks like the Washington Wizards will not be represented in this year’s NBA All Star game. Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison, both elected last year, will have to make other plans for All Star weekend after the coaches left them off of their ballots this year. Arenas is a suprising omission given that he’s fourth in the entire league in scoring in addition to the…

Weekend Sports Roundup: All About Adu Edition

>> Although it’s (finally) playoff time in MLS, most of the discussion around DC United centers around 16-year-old Freddy Adu. Last week he complained publicly about his playing time, or perceived lack of it. The next day, Adu met with team officials in an effort to clear the air, but apparently he did not apologize, so he was suspended for United’s playoff game on Friday against the Chicago Fire, which ended in a listless…

Midweek Hoops Roundup: Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead Edition

>> Despite their propensity to fight through injuries this year, the absence of All Star Antawn Jamison was evident last night as the Washington Wizards fell in Denver to the red hot Nuggets 127-98. Gilbert Arenas led the Wiz with 25, but the team shot just 39% from the field. Coach Eddie Jordan might want to look at the team’s defense too. The Nuggets shot over 55% and it’s never a good thing when…

Last Taste of Hockey?

And DCist blanks on telling everyone about the start of 2004 World Cup of Hockey last night. We plead Olympic hangover. But hockey fans have nothing to fear with 13 games remaining to satiate your hockey craving. Actually hockey fans, there may be something to fear with the probable delay of the NHL season, but we will get to that later. First things first. Tonight the United States takes the ice with Canada at Montreal’s…
