United Falter Late, Draw With Dallas

D.C. United’s wide open style of play came back to bite them on Saturday when they gave up three goals in the second half. In doing so they snatched a draw from the jaws of victory, earning themselves a 3-3 tie on an otherwise lovely night at RFK. After scoring early in the first half and adding another goal just before the halftime whistle, United looked fully in control after another score by Luciano…

United Storm Past Rapids, 4-1

D.C. United manager Tom Soehn wants to forget about last Saturday’s debacle at previously winless Real Salt Lake. After an opening spell that might have given Soehn flashbacks, an under-strength United helped him do that with a strong final sixty minutes and a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rapids at RFK Stadium. There were plenty of important moments – newcomers Fred and Luciano Emilio’s fluid passing movies with playmaker Christian Gomez, Jamaican forward Nicholas…

United Walk Away with a Draw

Under some circumstances, a draw is an acceptable result in soccer. Playing in a hostile stadium against a superior opponent would be one of these circumstances. If you head into the second leg of a Cup match with the lead on aggregate, you’d be happy to walk away with a draw. You’d contently take away one point from a match when you are desperate to end a season-long losing streak: baby steps, right? D.C. United…

Dismal Weekend in Washington Sports

When the best sports news to come out of the weekend is that the Nationals managed to not get swept, the thing to do is move on as quickly as possible. We’ll try and make as painless as possible for you. Redskins Grab Safety in First Round With the sixth overall pick in Saturday’s NFL draft (and only pick in the first four rounds), the Redskins selected LaRon Landry, a hard-hitting safety from LSU. What’s…

United Rocked by K.C.

After weeks on the road in hostile conditions, United had been looking forward to Saturday night’s MLS home opener for quite some time. The boisterous 22,358 in attendance were determined to make United’s homecoming a pleasant one. The driving rain and potent Kansas City Wizards offense were not. The Wizards took advantage of United’s defensive lapses with polished finishing to claim a 4-2 victory. It took only 3 minutes for the Wizards to deliver…

Victory Eludes United in CONCACAF Semifinal

In front of a hostile crowd at Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, D.C. United achieved a dream start in the 36th minute. Unfortunately for United, the MLS drought on Mexican soil was not to be extinguished as Chivas drew even before the half and eventual netted the game winner in the second half, earning a trip to the CONCACAF Champion’s Cup Finals on 3-2 aggregate. From early on in the first half, United played more aggressively…

United Storm into RFK, 2007

When we last left D.C. United, they were ambling off the field, humbled by Taylor Twellman and the New England Revolution. Though their season ended on a sour note, they were able to reconcile the Revs loss with a significant piece of hardware, the Supporters’ Shield, earned by compiling the best regular-season record in the MLS. It was this accomplishment that allowed United to participate in the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, which began last Wednesday night…

Weekend Sports Roundup: Openings and Closings Edition

Quite the sports weekend for the greater DC area. Something for everyone as they say. We’ll start out at RFK with the DC United and NY Red Bulls match, for no other reason except that I was there with the pictures to prove it. Despite considering myself to be quite the soccer fan, I’m ashamed to say that this was my first ever United game. And when the Red Bulls scored twice in the first…

DC United Season Begins Sunday

The big sports story of this weekend for area sports fans is going to be the inspiring play of the George Mason men’s basketball team as they compete for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Still, we hope that you will spare a thought for your DC United, who open their 2006 season Sunday at RFK Stadium against the New York Red Bulls. Ugh. Yes, DC, the MLS team you love to hate just got…

United Bow Out of US Open Cup

DC United let one get away last night, losing to FC Dallas 4-1 on penalties in US Open Cup play at the soccer complex in Germantown, Maryland. United had hoped to advance to the Open Cup semifinals for the third time in five years, and appeared to be in control, up 1-0 in the final minute as Freddy Adu sliced deep into the Dallas defense and laid a pass off to an open Brian Carroll…
