According to data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, there are nearly two dozen cases of COVID-19 inside the Caroline Detention Facility.

According to the letter, there are now only 12 individuals being held at the Farmville Detention Center.

The bill classifies privately-operated immigrant detention centers as “local correctional facilities,” which would allow them to be subject to the same health inspections as local jails in the state.

The inspection report finds Farmville staff failed to respond to a severe COVID-19 outbreak and left detainees without proper medical care as the virus spread.

The ruling follows a lawsuit filed against ICE on behalf of four Farmville detainees.

The man was 72 years old, according to an ICE spokesperson, and had previously tested positive for COVID-19.
