Less than a decade ago, D.C.’s lowest-wage workers were paid $8.25 an hour. Starting Wednesday, the city’s minimum wage will hit a new milestone: $15.

It will go into effect in 2023, and it will cover more than 8,000 workers at the two airports.

It is the first rung of the stepladder to a $15 minimum wage.

Some 5,000 people, many of whom make the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour, will see their wages increase to $12.75 by 2020.

But County Executive Ike Leggett also outlined conditions under which he would support a modified version of the bill.

It remains to be seen if the county executive will veto it over fears of the impact on local businesses.

Advocates for restaurant workers say they will work to get it on the 2018 ballot.
