The 46-year-old full-size ice rink was set to close this weekend in preparation for demolition and construction of a new facility, but those plans are now off.

The campaign comes after Mayor Muriel Bowser asked the D.C. Council to divert funds that had been allocated for the Fort Dupont Ice Arena toward repairs for schools and rec centers instead.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says some D.C. schools are in critical need of new HVAC systems, and she wants to use money from the planned modernization of the city’s only public ice rink to pay for them.

The city announced Tuesday its plans to build a new Fort Dupont Ice Arena in 2016.
