Best Highbrow Events of 2013
Enough of what appeals to the common man. Sometimes you just want to be a snob. Here are some of the most high-falutin’ things you can do in the D.C. area.
By now everyone in the District knows about the very popular events taking place at the House of Sweden, and many of the other embassies around the city. Though somewhat out of the way, and that may not be a bad thing for those hoping to avoid crowds, the French Embassy’s cultural wing, La Maison Française, also deserves prominent mention on this list. Ranging from film festivals to concerts, the venue hosts events to…

Classical Music Agenda
This week you could be a busy classical listener, and hearing a concert almost every day, sometimes twice, without paying anything. The problem is that not all free concerts are equally strong, but who can complain about hearing music for free? MONDAY: >> The women of the Salem Academy Glee Club will give a free lunchtime concert (February 26, 12:10 p.m.) at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The program will consist of…

Nouvelle Vague @ the French Embassy
By DCist contributor Abby Lavin I spent my first 40 minutes in the sold-out French Embassy auditorium last night, being blown away by who I thought was the French band Nouvelle Vague, but who actually turned out to be L.A. duo The Submarines. Confusions aside, I developed a big crush on Submarines front-woman Blake Hazard (turns out the feeling is mutual – she tells us she’s a big fan of sister site LAist). Armed with…

D.C.: Design Capital?
If you’ve been at work all week lamenting the fact that you’re crunching numbers in a cube instead of rubbing elbows in Bryant Park, fear not: DC Fashion Week is here. We won’t pretend it compares to New York’s Fashion Week, but we can’t argue with its mission. “DC Fashion Week was created to increase economic development in the area of fashion design, clothing merchandising and modeling, and to enhance the visibility of the nation’s…

It may be Sunday, but we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend — spare the freak thunderstorm Friday night that left some 32,000 area residents without power. Great weather promotes outdoor activity, like walking, running, and cycling. And in cycling news, though lacking in a specific local angle (spare the French Embassy on Reservoir Road in Northwest), it’s worth noting that Lance Armstrong, pictured at right, today ended his highlight-filled career with a record-breaking…

Out and About: Weekend Picks
FRIDAY: >> Kaiser Chiefs, a Leeds, England five-piece, hits the stage at the 9:30 Club tonight. Their music is infectious (you know, in a good way), confident, and sure to get you dancing. And they’re cute, in a quintessentially British sort of way. $15. Doors open at 9, openers The Cribs go on at 10:15, and the Kaiser Chiefs will be on stage at 11:30. At which point we’ll be asleep. Because we are old….

Previously at DCist: Hot Hot Weekend Edition
Good evening, D.C. This weekend was certainly hot. Capital Weather’s forecast indicates more of the same, with a chance of storms for much of the week. And there’s good news for the Nationals — their winning streak now stands at 10 wins. This photo, taken by Remain Fabulous and posted in DCist Photos, is of Saturday evening’s Annual Pride Parade, which was part of the 30th anniversary of Capital Pride In some quick news items…

Beaujolais Nouveau Uncorks Tonight
It’s that time of year again. Expect sidewalks on Pennsylvania and Connecticut avenues to be crowded as midnight approaches. Brasserie Les Halles and Bistrot du Coin will be celebrating Beaujolais Nouveau, that light red wine that only ages for a few weeks. As French law dictates, new wine cannot be served until the third Thursday in November. The result, of course, is a lot of drinking and many stained teeth at midnight Wednesday. Les Halles…
