Velvet Lounge to Host John Stabb Benefit Show
Three weeks ago, John Stabb, singer from legendary D.C. hardcore act Government Issue, was attacked and beaten near his home in Burtonsville, Maryland. He describes the incident in a blog entry on Dag Nasty’s website: i’m about a block away from my place coming home after work & really exhausted. out from the outdor pool area of my condo community pops up 5 enthusiastic (now i’m thinking all hopped up on goofballs!) young hs kids….

The Advantage Play Nintendo at Warehouse Next Door
Named after an NES joystick, The Advantage tore apart the Warehouse Next Door on monday. The foursome from California plays instrumental Nintendo covers, but somehow aren’t gimmicky. With no keyboards or electronics, the two guitarists, bassist, and maniacal drummer have to be blisteringly fast and precise – hitting the turbo button as video gamers might say. A good portion of the crowd seemed to leave after local openers Durga Temple and French Toast, and they…

Morning Roundup: Feeling the Heat Edition
Hey there, D.C. It’s another bright, sunny day in our fair city, with an expected high of 89 degrees. Who else might be feeling the heat this morning? Anyone trying to sell their homes…

Photo of the Day: August 9, 2006
We want to sing and dance now that we’re heading into mild summer days. Or at least our local photographers do. Flickr user French Toast caught this intimate image of a street musician, who’s clearly been with his sax on a long, jazzy ride (EXIF data here). She also caught a great portrait of him here, while other photogs hunted down Irish dancers, gold dancers, and trumpet players….

Concert Review: Supersystem @ The Black Cat
Written by DCist Music Contributor Jim Smalley. With all the eating and drinking these past few weeks, we were looking to burn off some of the extra holiday flub. Which is why we were excited to check out D.C. electronic dancepunkers Supersystem on Saturday night at the Black Cat. Following up openers Ris-Paul-Ric and French Toast , supersystem – formerly on Dischord Records as El Guapo – took their home stage before a full house…

Out and About: The Holidays Are Here!
Oh my. Everywhere we looked this around, we were swamped by a multitude of events having to do with pine trees and carols and lights and cookies.
