Love: Forever Changes?

Fritz Hahn posts notice that Love opened last night after it shuttered its doors for nearly three months following a nearly fatal New Year’s Eve stabbing. Among the changes for the new-and-improved Love: more security, inside and outside the new club. One other thing that’s changed: U Street Music Hall has opened and it’s the coolest dance club in the capital and it’s hard to imagine why anyone would continue to patronize Love, “La-Tex” party…

Out and About: Weekend Picks

FRIDAY: Odds are good you will be imbibing a beer or 12 this evening in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, so please write down this number in big, bold letters and stick it in your wallet right now: 1-800-200-TAXI. That’s the number for SoberRide, which will be in operation from 4 p.m. today until 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. If you’re over 21, the SoberRide program will pay for a taxi (up to $50) to pick…

St. Patrick’s Day Round-Up: Guinness is Good for You

Thrillist, the New York-based guy’s version of Daily Candy, reminds readers in today’s email that, “For some, St. Patrick’s Day is a reason to call in sick, then drink all day. For others, it’s a reason to work ’til lunch, then drink all day.” With the St. Patrick’s Day parade and the Shamrock Fest a distant memory, is the same true for the District? Will your Irish or Irish-at-heart boss mind if you ditch work…

Development Sparks Controversy in Shaw

New development in the historic Shaw neighborhood has put two restaurateurs’ liquor licenses on uncertain footing and sparked a conflict about the future of the neighborhood. The restaurants are located on Ninth Street between the new Convention Center and Rhode Island Avenue, just blocks from both the Mt. Vernon Square and Shaw Metro stations and steps from where this DCist lives. They also both happen to be located a stone’s throw from Shiloh Baptist Church,…

Morning Roundup: Highs in the 80s Edition

Today will be mostly sunny earlier becoming partly cloudy, with highs around 80. Yes, folks – you read right – 80! The photo to the right was submitted to DCist Photos by Jim Tucker via Flickr. Spring is Here: For the Post’s Fritz Hahn, this can only mean one thing: “Temperatures are climbing into the 70s. The sun sets after 7:30. It’s time to move happy hour outside.” With the city’s plant life coming alive,…

Gentrifying the Gentrifiers

Can a bar created to cater to young professionals itself be gentrified? That’s the question on the minds of some Columbia Heights residents who have watched Wonderland Ballroom race rapidly from a non pretentious neighborhood hangout to an aggressively hip lounge, complete with the corresponding aggressive pricing and Orange Line clientele. After opening in 2004 in a residential neighborhood in Columbia Heights at the old site of the gay bar Nob Hill, Wonderland developed a…

Where to Go (or Not Go) On St. Patty’s Day

We at DCist, by and large, agree with Fritz Hahn’s sentiments. St. Patrick’s Day is a great day to enjoy a traditional celebration with friends and relax; it’s also strictly amateur hour at the bars, where the crowds pile in and pay cover charges to consume incorrectly poured pints of Guinness and listen to Irish music for the first (and often only) time in the year — not to mention befouling our woefully unprepared streets….

iPods Make the Big Time!

In an article that reminds us a little bit of USA Today’s recent shocking discovery that iPods are popular, a Post front-page article today delves into the underbelly of Saint-Ex’s regular iPod DJ Night. We kid, we kid. We’re glad the iPod DJ nights got some good press — we’re totally a fan of the monthly events, and couldn’t be more pleased that local bloggers Seeking Irony and WeirdCurves got quoted. But at the same…

Mid-Morning Roundup: Christmas Eve Edition

Happy holidays, everybody! This morning roundup will be briefer than usual, given that we’ve still got to wrap some presents, bake some goodies, and drink several glasses of mulled wine along the way. CapitalWeather gives us the outlook for the next ten days (sorry, no snow, but plenty of cold). If you’re hanging out in the city, remember to check out our post about restaurants that are open at this time of year. And if…
