Out of Frame: 8: The Mormon Proposition

Never lose your cool. That seems to be the mantra under which directors Reed Cowan and Steven Greenstreet operated in the making of this documentary. The film contains enough inflammatory information — about the efforts of the Mormon Church to ban gay marriage in California — to send any supporter of marriage equality into a rage. To their credit, the filmmakers present their story in a calm, even manner, wisely allowing the passions of…

Calif. Supreme Court Upholds Prop 8: Protest Tonight in Dupont Circle

When news spread that the court would hand down its ruling today, D.C. gay rights activists made immediate plans for a gathering tonight, the flavor to be determined by how the justices ruled. Well, the court has decided to uphold the proposition, which bans gay marriage in the state. So tonight’s gathering, starting at 8:30, will definitely be a protest. One positive note, though obviously bittersweet: the justices ruled that about 18,000 same-sex marriages sealed…

Popcorn & Candy: Secrets & Lies

DCist’s highly subjective and hardly comprehensive guide to the most interesting movies playing around town in the coming week. Outrage Opponents of Kirby Dick’s new documentary — we covered one earlier today — will say that people’s private lives should remain private. While there aren’t usually major events to commemorate the day, there are a couple of local events that coincide with…

The March for Tolerance in Virginia Continues

On the same day that we receive news the the District is elevating the level of importance they give to protecting and promoting gay, bisexual, and trangender rights, we find Virginia continuing its long march in the opposite direction. As we noted last week, Virginia’s voters will have a chance this November to amend their state constitution so as to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, thus putting the final…
