#19 Cavs Visit College Park

Written by DCist contributor Brett Gellman The Maryland Terrapins (4-2, 1-1) take on the 19th ranked Virginia Cavaliers (6-1, 3-0) in a nationally televised homecoming contest tomorrow night at College Park in what is shaping up to be the best ACC matchup of the entire day, and yes, that includes Miami-FSU. The Terps, who are coming off a much-needed bye week, squeaked out a 28-26 victory against Georgia Tech two weeks ago after Travis Bell’s…

Agent Zero Declares Kevin Durant Is “No Hibachi”

There are plenty of NBA trade rumors floating around out there with the draft less than 30 hours away, and while the Wizards are keeping a relatively low profile as a team, that doesn’t mean the players aren’t keeping busy. Above is one of the new NBA ’08 Live commercials that feature our still beloved Agent Zero with Maryland native and future NBA superstar Kevin Durant. Angry T has the other two if you’re…

Area Women Settle into Top 10

For the first time this season, two area teams occupy spots in the AP’s top 10 for women’s college hoops. While their male counterparts’ seasons have been wrought with inconsistencies, reigning champs Maryland (22-3, #6) and surging GW (19-2, #8) have been making noise all season. This afternoon’s poll reveals GW’s first appearance in the top ten since February, 1992. The Colonials are riding a 12-game winning streak and are unbeaten in conference play. Their…

College Hoops: Conference Tournaments, Day 2

Though ranked sixth in the country, George Washington has been characterized as an overrated team. Given the opportunity to prove that their 26-1 record and 18 game winning streak wasn’t just a house of cards, the Colonials instead folded, losing 68-53 to Temple in the first-round of the Atlantic Ten tournament. The loss is not only disappointing and gives fuel to the team’s critics, but it likely cost them a couple of seeds in…

College Hoops: Conference Tournaments, Day 1

Prior to yesterday afternoon, the last time the Georgetown Hoyas took the court they put on an embarrassing performance, losing to South Florida and costing themselves a first-round bye in the Big East conference tournament in the process. In the first half of Wednesday’s game against Notre Dame, they extended their streak of mediocre-to-bad play to 60 minutes, missing their first 12 shots and trailing at the break before rallying for a 67-63 win….

McCray Ruled Ineligible For Terps

This post was written by DCist contributor Hayden Alfano Maryland’s men’s basketball team took a serious hit Monday with the announcement that senior shooting guard Chris McCray has been ruled academically ineligible and will miss the rest of the season, thus ending his career at Maryland. McCray has captained the Terps each of the last two seasons, and with 15.2 points per game, was the team’s leading scorer. He’s also one of the team’s few…

GW Begins Big Dance Tonight

George Washington University will make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1999 tonight when they take on the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets at 9:40 PM in Nashville TN. Credit head coach Karl Hobbs and his tireless recruiting for getting the Colonials back on the national basketball map. GW was 12-16 in Hobbs first year but has steadily improved since then, including a trip to the NIT last year. Understandably, Hobbs was less than…

Weekend Hoops Roundup: Big Dance Edition

>> The nation’s capitol is abuzz with all the local teams picked by the NCAA to make it to the Big Dance. Wait, what’s that you say? Maryland didn’t make it? OK, fine, what about Georgetown then? NIT bound you say? Then how about your Atlantic 10 Champions over at George Washington? You better believe they were packing their bags after winning their first every conference tournament title 76-67 over St. Joeseph’s. The win…

March Madness Hits DC

We know Maryland fans may not agree with us right now, but is there a better time of year for sports fans than March? That’s a rhetorical question because the answer is a resounding no. Football is in it’s free agent signing period, baseball is down South preparing for opening day, teams in the NBA start jockeying for playoff position and college basketball starts preening for the camera as the spotlight shines upon it….

Terrible Terps Return

Alrighty then, so much for momentum. After seemingly turning their lost season around with big victories over Duke and Georgia Tech (two Final Four participants from last year), Maryland laid an egg last night by losing on the road to ACC doormat Clemson. The 88-73 win marked the Tigers first victory over Maryland since the last millenium. “We’re still trying to find our identity in terms of being able to play hard every night,” Maryland…
