Wizards Down Toronto, Honor “The Pearl”

Ticket holders for Saturday’s Wizards v. Raptors match up probably made their purchases with visions of Gilbert Arenas and Chris Bosh dancing in their head. With both stars injured for the game, instead it turned into the Roger Mason Jr. v. Jason Kapono show. It turns out this wasn’t a bad thing at all. After not playing at all in Thursday’s loss in Philadelphia, Mason Jr. came off the bench to score 15 big…

Breaking News: Arenas Out Three Months

The worst case scenario for the Washington Wizards came to pass today. Gilbert Arenas had surgery earlier today to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss the next three months. Arenas sat out the Wizards last two games with soreness in the knee. Antonio Daniels will likely move into the starting lineup at the PG spot and, as a result, rookie Nick Young should move up in the rotation. He’s…

One Nation, Under Gil (Even If He’s Hurt)

Given that this is bound to be a slow day at work, what better time for Gilbert Arenas and adidas to launch GilTV, undoubtedly the next phase of The Takeover. Included are four new commercials — The Black President (above), Cooking With Gil, Agent Zero and Gilbert’s Island — all seemingly ripped right out of the pages of The Wizznutzz. Let’s hope those guys are at least getting some royalty checks from this. On…

Wizards Make It Two In A Row

Who says the Washington Wizards didn’t improve over the offseason? Last night DCist made our first trip down to the Verizon Center this season and noticed plenty of changes; fancy new press credentials (now with marketing slogans!), shiny, new flat screen monitors in press row in section 104, that snazzy $50 million scoreboard that puts a whole new spin on the Kiss-Cam and a new red carpet themed video set to Kanye West’s “Bigger,…

Wizards Not Ready To Rule Yet

.354 from the field .203 from three point land 91.7 points per game No matter how you look at the numbers, it’s clear the Washington Wizards struggled in the opening week of the NBA season, a fact reflected in their 0-3 record. The team looks disjointed on offense, taking bad shots and turning the ball over with impunity. And by giving up 105+ points per game – good for 26th in the league -…

Out and About: Weekend Picks

We’re a little short-staffed today, so if you’ve got any picks to add for this weekend, please leave them in the comments. FRIDAY >> This weekend the Uptown Theater is playing the final cut of everybody’s favorite movie about replicants running amock, and young Darryl Hannah being super sci-fi hot, Blade Runner. >> If an apocalyptic future isn’t exactly what you’re in the mood for, try on Seattle’s dream folk rockers, Band of Horses, for…

Washington Wizards Season Preview

The recent Kobe for Gilbert trade rumors (shot down yesterday by Ernie Grunfeld — not that that means anything) should give you an indication that the Washington Wizards are at a crossroads season in regards to the franchise’s future. Gilbert Arenas has gone on record saying he will opt out of his contract at the end of the season and Antawn Jamison is in the final year of his deal. Something’s got to give…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

As it gets closer to Halloween for LAist, a contributer recollects her tale of staring down the serial killer, Richard Ramirez, otherwise known as the Night Stalker. Must think happy thoughts — okay, free organic chocolate chip cookies for Los Angeles — now that’s a happy thought. Other happy Los Angeles thoughts include an interview with Jack Kehler of The Big Lebowski (he was the Dude’s landlord), a beautiful and magical photographic moment in Venice…

Gilbert Arenas is Cheating at Halo 3

Via our tipline comes a disturbing allegation about Washington’s beloved NBA all-star, Gilbert Arenas. Game-fixing! Encouraging teammates to take dives to pad his own stats! And an unrepentant attitude that makes it all that much worse. Of course, the competitive enterprise in question is Halo 3, not NBA basketball. But that makes it no less disturbing. The allegations of Agent Zero’s ill-gotten swag surfaced this morning on the forums of Bungie, the company responsible for…

D.C.’s Most Influential People

Just this week, GQ published their annual “50 Most Powerful People in D.C.” list. Populated by the likes of Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Karl Rove and Tim Russert, the list better describes the movers and shakers in “Washington”, but not the District. And since we’re snobs about local news and happenings, we threw together a little list of the people who really exercise influence in or over the lives of people who live and work…
