Tour of American Gardens on the Mall

The United States Botanic Garden is a favorite summer destination, and the list of reasons to visit has gotten longer. In a recently opened exhibit, Celebrating America’s Public Gardens, the nation’s most important public gardens have sponsored mini-displays in two sections called Green Today, Growing Tomorrows (in the National Garden, at the Mall end of the grounds) and A Sense of Place (on the Conservatory Terrace, facing Capitol Hill). Out and About: Weekend Picks

Well, this weekend looks like it’s going to be absolutely gorgeous, so we’re hard pressed to recommend doing anything besides rolling around in the grass outside. With a beer. Or seven. President Not Informed of D.C. Water Emergency

DCist has learned that President Bush, who has been delivering a commencement speech in friendly GOP territory at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., was not informed by emergency response authorities that a large chunk of his capital was without water during the morning and afternoon today. OK, we’re only kidding here, forgive us, it’s Saturday … Anyway, we don’t think the president cares to know where Ward 1 is, despite that it is the…

Now the suburb is…

Red Van With Man From Red Flannel Town

In case anyone was wondering whether yesterday’s standoff between the man in the red van near the White House was a distressed constituent from out of town, sure enough, he was. In fact, the man, Lowell Timmers, is from Cedar Springs, Mich., a small exurban town north of Grand Rapids called Red Flannel Town USA. The town’s biggest event, Red Flannel Day, says that Cedar Springs has “small-town charm and home-grown characteristics.” Yesterday’s episode may…

Although DCist will still be publishing, we will be doing a lighter load over the coming week. Bloggers have families, too, and some of our parents have very slow modems that make posting on a regular basis…

Regional Development at Critical Juncture

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has been in the news lately for a couple initiatives. First, they have announced recently the creation of a panel of experts to examine alternate sources of dedicated funding for Metro. The Post describes it as a move to prevent the “financial meltdown” of the system. WMATA is the fourth largest public transit agency in the U.S., and operates the next busiest subway in the country after New York….
