Album Review: City-State’s Monument

The first thing we noticed when City-State’s first full-length, Monument, arrived is that it looked very professional. Often with local bands the CDs look (and usually are) homemade. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just something that stuck out as a good sign. The CD cover has a picture of Vladimir Tatlin’s unbuilt sculpture “Monument to the Third International,” one of those things that pops up in architecture books from time to time, superimposed over…

Now Is The Discontent Of Our Winter

Washington’s last chance for snowpocalypse is upon us. The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory beginning at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning through 7:00 p.m. in the evening. The Feds are calling for 3 to 4 inches of snow total, but our friends at Capital Weather are nudging the outlook closer to 1 or 2 inches in the metro area, the killjoys. This storm is a result of an Alberta Clipper, an icy…

Rush-Bagot Monument Comes Out of Hiding

When architects, developers, and laborers set about transforming the former Columbia Hospital for Women into the massive Columbia Residences complex at the intersection of 25th Street, L Street, and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, they placed the area within a protective cocoon of chain-link fences. With…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Let’s take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? Austinist was in an entertainment state of mind as they covered the dickens out of the Austin Film Festival, depicted all the Big 12 football coaches as South Park characters, and interviewed Jose Gonzalez. Chicagoist talked about the passion as they bid adieu to Bell’s Beer,…

On the Road in Michigan: Part Two

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — If it weren’t that this DCist ran across additional snow flakes yesterday driving through the unseasonably cold spring weather, Lake Michigan looked down-right enticing when we went to the beach. Calm water, some sun, and the summer tourists from Chicagoland were nowhere in sight. And for $1.50, a bag of chocolate-covered peanuts from Fortino’s on Washington Street was welcome treat. But we should have gotten a Pronto Pup, which is “a…

Zebra Mussels Discovered in Va.

It seems like the area has a new invasive species to worry about. Just when local anglers are getting used to reeling in the occasional snakehead from the Potomac, the AP, via WTOP, is reporting that a local diver has discovered zebra mussels in the watery depths of a Haymarket quarry. Virginia officials have confirmed the presence of the destructive mollusks, whose presence came as a complete surprise. “I was only down 10 feet, and…
