Out and About: Weekend Picks
FRIDAY: >> The Howard Homecoming events could make an entire Weekend Picks feature by themselves, but don’t forget to consider some of the less publicized goings on we’re recommending as a way to enjoy the fun without the insane crowds. >> Tickets are still available for the amazingly cheap (only $10!) Catalyst Theatre Company production of Kafka’s The Trial. Check out our review over here, and get your tickets — did we mention they’re only…

6 Points Music Festival: Day 3, DC9
This review by DCist contributor Genevieve Smith. On the last night of a three-day local music extravaganza, DC9 played host to the Orange and Blue-liners as they hip-shimmied and head-bobbed to the musical-stylings of local acts Monopoli, Hello Tokyo, No Second Troy and Mira Stella Stella Mira. If Train and Coldplay are your jam, DC9 might have been your musical Mecca Saturday. But if you’re the sort that prefers to lurk in the dark corners…

“Keys” Me Goodbye
Once again, DCist Three Stars alum Hello Tokyo has invaded network television. Back in February, their single “Radio” was chosen by Animal Planet as the theme song to a mini series on horseback riding called “Horse Power,” with several of their other songs used throughout the rest of the show. Now MTV has noticed this local talent, featuring their song “Kiss Me Goodbye” on the premiere episode of The Real World: Key West. Fellow District…

Six Points Music Festival Lineup Announced
For those of you that don’t know, Six Points is a D.C. music festival in its third year, hosted at venues in and around the city, including the Black Cat, Jammin Java, the State Theater, The Mansion at Strathmore and more. This year’s lineup was announced yesterday on the festival’s blog. The GOG Blog has an interesting take on the festival, namely, that the bands selected are all homogeneous and don’t represent the full spectrum…

Muzak No More? (Updated)
Leave it to the caffeine-infused minds of Seattle to come up with the answer to our dial-in woes. According to Governing Magazine, Seattle residents will no longer be subjected to Glen Hollis’ rejects when they make a call to city hall. A new program called OnHold replaces synthesized easy listening with a selection of local musicians. The playlist of 11 bands from different genres is updated every few months. What’s better is how the new…

Out and About: Weekend Picks
FRIDAY: Anyone in need of a little funk infusion tonight would do well to check out Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at Black Cat. The DCist staff list today was full of sentiments like “I’ve heard great things about these guys,” and Jones’ background suggests she probably has more than a passing understanding of the world of soul: She was born in Augusta, Georgia (hometown of James Brown) and spent her teens in Brooklyn, NY….

Local Band, National TV
In our continued effort to let you know when the local kids make a splash on a bigger canvas, we have some very exciting news for Hello Tokyo fans out there. Not only were they featured in last month’s Three Stars, but tonight marks the debut of Horse Power, a new series on Animal Planet. What in the heck does this have to do with Hello Tokyo, you ask? You see, their song, “Radio,” has…
