Photo of the Day: December 28, 2007

There is a whole slew of fantastic architecture shots in the pool right now — looks like those of you still hanging around town this week all had the same idea. This shot by *wanderlust*, a new recruit to the DCist pool, of the Heurich House is a stand-out, with, perhaps strangely, the soft-focus really bringing out the texture of the old stones. EXIF. While you’re puttering around waiting for all your friends to…

Heurich House: Present and Future

With the recent good news that the historic Heurich House would be staying open to the public, DCist had a few questions regarding what the $100,000 raised thus far has been used for and what the future portends for the Dupont Circle landmark. Gary Heurich of Friends of the Castle informed us that their prior goal of raising $250,000 goal no longer stands. Rather, the $100,000 that was raised over the past 46 days was…

Previously on DCist

It was another busy week in the world of DCist. We checked up on the mayoral war chests, looked at the design for the new stadium, found out that the District has two of the country’s billionaires, and put a new District anthem to a vote. DCist’s own Scott Reitz gave being a vegetarian a shot, we reported on new parking regulations for churchgoers and found out that the Heurich House will be staying…

Breaking News: Heurich House Saved, Will Stay Open to Public

DCist received word last night that the Heurich House, widely known as the Brewmaster’s Castle, has been saved from being sold for private use, and will thus remain open to the public. Citing a press release emailed by Gary Heurich, over $100,000 has been raised from nearly 2,000 donations over the past 44 days, and while that didn’t meet the $250,000 that was needed by yesterday, the cooperative lender has allowed for an imminent refinancing…

Update on “The House That Beer Built”

What started as a grassroots effort to save Heurich House has now garnered the attention of a national cable news channel: CNN reported earlier this week on what they dubbed as “the house that beer built”. On their website, the ubiquitous news network relayed the history of the house as well as the urgent financial situation. It’s good to see that the word is getting out about keeping a piece of history open to the…

Heurich House Deadline Extended

First off, a huge thank you to all of our readers who have aided in the effort to save the Heurich House. On the heels of a successful Valentine’s Day fundraiser was the February 15 deadline for possible foreclosure of the mansion. To that effect, we have some heartening news. Due to the large amount of money that has already been raised, as well as strong community support, the bank holding the mortgage has extended…

Morning Roundup: The V-Day Edition

To our readers, we love you guys. Happy Valentine’s Day from DCist! If the shopping scene last night at Tyson’s Corner Center Hallmark, Kay Jewelers and CVS was any indication, some folks were a little tardy on picking up the heart-shaped pendants and Whitman’s Samplers. Were you one of the tardy rushing for anything and everything heart-shaped and colored red? Or are you instead going to play the “But honey, it’s a Hallmark holiday” card?…
