The city will lose a total of 787 beds over the next year between two shelters closing for renovations and the end of the PEP-V program.

The local holiday will trigger some government closures and schedule changes.

DGS says the heat is functioning, and temperatures are well within safe ranges.

“The mayor says we’re ‘living in fear.’ All that we fear is for the health and safety of the families,” says one Ward 5 resident.

Much of the discussion revolved around the details, some of which hadn’t been publicly discussed before, of the financial aspects of the deal.

“We’re here to insist that the most vulnerable in our society, particularly these children, have better housing than an industrial site,” one woman said.

Some neighbors say their fears aren’t reactionary NIMBYism so much as concern for the specific locations of the plan—and the way the mayor rolled it out.

Next week, Arlington is getting a new one-stop homeless shelter that will be open 24/7—the only shelter of its kind in the region.
