The killing is part of a surge in violence against trans and LGBTQ+ people, advocates say.

The deadly shooting marks the 18th death of a child by homicide in the District this year, adding to the grim toll gun violence has taken on kids in the region in 2022.

The grim milestone comes amidst a broader spike in killings nationwide since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and has pushed D.C. officials to mount a response.

Mother’s Day is not a celebration for some moms. Some are remembering their children who were slain by gun violence — some moms are grieving the loss of their only child, while others are grieving the loss of multiple children.

Cotey Wynn, who started working as a violence interrupter with the office of D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine in 2018, was accused of shooting and killing 53-year-old Eric Linnair Wright in 2017.

D.C. Police say a 45-year-old man on a bicycle died after a driver intentionally struck him in Southeast on Sept. 4.

Roughly half of the city’s homicides this year remain unsolved, according to D.C. police.

There were 13 total juvenile homicide victims in D.C. in 2018, and seven in 2017.

The boy has been identified as Jaquar McNair of Southeast.

The victim has been identified as Steffen Brathwaite.
