D.C. residents launched a virtual tip jar for under-employed hospitality workers. A year later, it’s still active—and highlighting the limits of mutual aid.
The money will support restaurants, hotels, entertainment businesses, and retail businesses, city officials say.
Workers who received the funds say they spent them almost immediately and could now use more help.
The funding was initially identified in early April by sports and conventions authority Events DC.
The sports and conventions authority is primarily funded by dedicated taxes on restaurant orders and hotel stays.

The 18 million visitors that came to D.C. in 2011 pumped over $6 billion into the local economy. That should be enough for us to excuse the left-side standing on Metro escalators, right?
