The hotel has effectively become a family shelter for asylum seekers bused from red states. But families allegedly are not provided the same essential services typical of traditional family shelters and live under strict rules.

Hotels in the city could be sheltering right-wing extremists seeking to disrupt the inauguration and put D.C. residents’ health at risk, activists say.

Workers who received the funds say they spent them almost immediately and could now use more help.

The funding was initially identified in early April by sports and conventions authority Events DC.

The city has 90-day contracts with the hotels, which are providing more than 600 rooms combined.

The sports and conventions authority is primarily funded by dedicated taxes on restaurant orders and hotel stays.

“The uniformity that was once hallmark of a brand now has become a negative. People want surprises and experiences.”

Smaller rooms will mean lower rates.
