Car dealerships didn’t make it into the debate, but one GOP senator proposed that D.C. residents are too wealthy to grant the city statehood.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform passed the measure on party lines during Wednesday’s markup.

The legislation already has the support necessary to pass the House.

The progressive legislator has already spoken out about a few issues in the District, including the high cost of rent and the need for Hill staffers to work service jobs to make ends meet.
