The Weekly Feed: Disappearing History Edition
Walgreens To Invade Yenching Palace? The old restaurants are dropping like flies. At the end of 2005, Truman-era steakhouse Blackie’s House of Beef served up its last porterhouse. In August, embattled real estate developer Douglas Jemal purchased the land occupied by A.V. Ristorante — a move that will force the 57-year-old Italian restaurant to close by October 2007. And yesterday, an enterprising tipster told us that the rumor on the street (well, on Connecticut Avenue)…

Unbuckled Preview: The Vita Ruins
In August, DCist reviewed Thanks For Your Concern (but we’re okay), the latest offering from The Vita Ruins. Now it’s September and the band’s wormed its way into our iPods, our hearts, and our stage at Unbuckled 4. Here’s a second look at our review of the band’s EP. See the real thing tomorrow night at DC9 as the band takes the stage with Middle Distance Runner. A couple weeks ago, DCist was outside the…

A Site Announcement
Item: Dear readers, the time has come for this editor to move on. As of today, I’ll be stepping down as an Editor-in-Chief of DCist, and turning my set of reins over to Sommer Mathis, lately our Arts Editor, who’ll be running things alongside Martin. In August, I’ll be moving back to London, my home away from home, to pursue a PhD in Economic History. The goal is to make myself permanently unemployable, so I…

Trippy Painting to Barnstorm for Hilarious Anthem
You may recall a little fun we had back in March with a campaign to name the song “Come to Washington” by Lincoln Ross the city’s unofficial anthem. To jog your memory a bit, we here repeat the song’s first verse: Washington, D.C. A really great place to be, So if you’re into having fun, Come to Washington. Awesome. After telling you all about this, we solicited nominations for other potential anthems and then voted…

Cute New Club Seeking Members
They’ve promised to sponsor ice cream socials, plan happy hours, organize hayrides, and break up day laborer sites around the region. Yes, the Minuteman Project has arrived in Virginia. NBC 4 is reporting that members of the organization — the same folks that put together the controversial civil defense groups along the U.S.-Mexico border — are setting up shop in the region, and they look to identify illegal immigrants and the contractors that hire them….

D.C. Has a New Key
D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams unveiled a new “key to the city” at his weekly press conference yesterday. The key is designed by a local architect and sculptor John Dreyfuss, and Mayor Williams proclaimed Feb. 9, 2005, as “John Dreyfuss Day” as a token of gratitude. The Examiner reported today in a piece not online that Dreyfuss explained his design, which features eight slots representing the city’s eight wards, this way: “No matter how sophisticated the…

Taylor Charged With DUI; Wizards Suspended
As if things weren’t bad enough for the Redskins this season, rookie standout Sean Taylor was pulled over and charged with DUI early Wednesday morning. Virginia State Police Lt. Harry Newlin pulled Taylor over at 2:45 a.m., on the Beltway. Taylor was taken into custody after he failed a sobriety test at the scene and then refused a breathlizer. He was later released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond and is due in a…

iPod, Therefore I Am
Earlier this spring, DCist heard rumblings of a crazy thing taking place at the Galaxy Hut a little something called iPod DJing. Thats right no turntables or nothin all you needed to spin at these events was your cigarette pack-sized iPod and the ability to create a short playlist of your favorite songs. Anyone was welcome to participate; it was spinning for the masses at its best, and the musical plebeians out…

I adidas DC?
DCist spotted this nifty little button on the bus today. The owner, who conveniently had an extra when we expressed interest, said it was from the new Adidas store in Georgtown. In August, D.C. became one of eight U.S. cities which will have an “Adidas Originals Concept store,” ours located at 1251 Wisconsin Avenue. From their website, capitalization, spelling, and punctuation unchanged: North America’s 5th adidas Originals Store was opened in Washington DC’s coolest area:…
