The cancer mortality rate is down more than 10 percent from 2004, but the nation’s capital also tops the list of new HIV diagnoses among the 23 cities surveyed. And in just about all categories, black Washingtonians fared far worse health-wise than the white population.

D.C. has made marked gains, but the city is still last among the capital cities of the wealthiest countries in the world.
