Out and About: New Year’s Weekend Picks
In all honesty, it’s tough to wholeheartedly recommend going out on New Year’s Eve at all. We love the spirit of the holiday, but paying around $100 a person for a regular night of dancing dressed up with champagne is enough to make anyone feel like a schmuck. It’s a safe bet most of us at DCist will be hitting various house parties to ring in the new year with friends at a more reasonable…

Tonight you can go learn about the Peace Corps, take in the Digable Planets, get your activism on at the Sierra Club, or check out a film on Baile Funk at Provisions Library. DCSOB’s 28-Most Loathsome
Taking cues from New York Press’ 50-Most Loathsome New Yorkers, DCSOB (with the help of DCeiver) evaluated, rated and put together a list of D.C.’s most loathsome people. There are a few surprises among a list of some more obvious candidates. DCSOB picked Ward 4’s Adrian Fenty for the No. 1 slot. But on the list include Washingtonienne aka Jessica Cutler (No. 25); James F. of why.i.hate.dc (No. 21); Carol Thompson, the former Riggs Bank…

Yo DDOT! Fix Your Signs.
Do you see a problem here? Look closely. As why.i.hate.dc notes in a deserted Sunday photo walking tour from Georgetown to Chinatown, the sign for 17th Street NW was put up incorrectly at the corner of 17th and M streets NW. Perhaps this has been taken care of, but all of this points to a larger quality control problem at the District’s Department of Transportation. Have you seen any incorrect signage lately? Last year,…

More Virginia License Plates
A DCist operative in Arlington, who has sent us photos of Virginia vanity plates in the past, has sent us yet another one with his cameraphone. Perhaps with all the traffic expected to be flooding the Tysons Corner area in the coming years, Tivo will be an absolute necessity to survive exurban living. If you can’t escape your home because of clogged roads, you might as well not escape your Tivo. Embrace it, love it,…

Don’t Drink and Hunt?
New legislative excitement from Richmond! The Post reports that the Virginia General Assembly is considering a bill that has raised the ire of gun-rights advocates accusing proponents of a hunting-blood alcohol level clarification measure of trying to limit their Second Amendment protections. From the Post: … Senate Bill 1149 further clarifies the state code so that a hunter who had a blood alcohol content of .02 would be guilty of a misdemeanor. That’s tougher than…

Morning Roundup: First Monday of 2005 Edition
The warm weather will continue today with highs around 60, and a 40 percent chance of showers towards the afternoon. The photograph above of the Smithsonian Castle was taken Saturday. Thomas Circle Construction Begins: Traveling through or around Thomas Circle? Traffic patterns have been re-arranged to accommodate the start of a $5 million project to re-establish the park at the center of that circle. The W. Times also has a short write-up. Tsunami Recovery…

Morning Roundup: Killing Down, Library Hours Up
Homicide Levels Decrease in 2004: While it may be hard to keep a running tab on homicide levels throughout the year, the D.C. area can breath a little easier and perhaps feel safer. In 2004, homicide levels decreased not only in the District but in most surrounding jurisdictions as well. According to the AP, via WJLA, only 195 have been killed in the District this year. That’s a 19-percent drop over the previous year when…

It’s Easy to Get Vanity Plates in Virginia
Any reader of why.i.hate.dc knows of James F.’s disdain for vanity plates in the commonwealth of Virginia. DCist has for many months appreciated his careful observation and reporting of odd, inane and quirky personalized plates. In the commonwealth, it’s cheap and easy to get personalized plates. If you’re a Virginia resident, all you need to do is go to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ website and make one yourself. It’s sort of like…

Happy Hump Day: Scheming Women Edition
Its hump day! Hurrah! And what better way to celebrate than by reading Ms. Jessica Cutlers Playboy.com interview! She reveals gems like that shes had sex on the Mall, is registered as a Republican, and the storyline for her upcoming novel. (We say odds are 2:1 someone gets it in the butt.) If scheming, bloodthirsty women are more to your liking than sexterns, go check out “Macbeth”, which opened this week at the Shakespeare Theatre….
