Thanks For The Wake-Up Call, NORAD
Seeing and hearing jets fly over the District is nothing new for Washington residents. That said, you’d be excused from checking out the headline on this AP item — “Military training flights soaring over region” — and simply moving along. But then you’d miss this little nugget of information!

Photo Booth: J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets
Earlier today, we noted that a plane was planning on flying around the region at altitudes much lower than normally allowed. Thrilling as that may be, a Department of Defense calibration flight has nothing on the tricks that were pulled off during last weekend’s 2011 Joint Service Open House and Airshow at Andrews Air Force Base. A few of our DCist Flickr pool photographers were on hand to capture the incredible airborne precision on display.

Washington Suffers Late Game Loss to Cowboys
A day after Washington’s loss to…yes—hated rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, I find myself indulging in that oft-snarked out tendency of Redskins fans: the telling of sweet little lies. At least we didn’t get run out of the stadium, as we did against the Patriots. At least we didn’t collapse stupidly, like we did against the Eagles. At least the team we struggled with was a quality team (insofar as anything the NFC produces this year…

Skins Stave Off 1-8 Jets, Mediocrity
It took Joe Gibbs a few minutes to get to his point, but after only a couple cursory questions, he was able to say that, yes, the guys sure did “play their guts out” yesterday. It’s become a mantra of his, as though we’re rooting for a team of underdog high school kids and what matters isn’t whether they win or lose, but how they play the game. No matter the futility, the mind-boggling play…

Sharks, Jets Keep Cool @ Wolf Trap
By this point, you’re probably quite aware whether you’re someone who would roll eyes at the concept of dancing gangs snapping their fingers on the street, or someone whose heart soars when subjected to the lush, romantic melodies of Leonard Bernstein. For those of us in the latter category, Wolf Trap has just what we need as summer comes to an end – a traditional take on the musical theater classic, West Side Story. Alan…

About Tonight
>> The Jets are gonna have their day tonight at Wolf Trap with the first night of a one week stand of the Leonard Bernstein/Steven Sondheim classic West Side Story. The production celebrates the 50th anniversary of the musical. 8 p.m., $18-$55. >> It’s a great evening for movies. If the Jim Jarmusch classic we recommended last week isn’t quite what you’re looking for, then there’s also a FREE screening of Butch Cassidy and…

Arts Agenda: Outside the Box
There are more ways to take in our local arts scene than strolling the quiet museums on a Saturday afternoon or gulping some free wine at a gallery reception. Checking out events and lectures around the city is a great way to get exposed to not only the current exhibitions, but new ideas and theories you might not come upon while browsing the canvases by yourself. >> Patrick Swayze probably won’t be there to perform,…

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane…
Yeah, it’s just a plane. Sure, we’re used to the familiar sounds of government officials buzzing around Washington in a fleet of helicopters, seemingly omnipresent in the city’s skies. While not clogging up streets, the executive branch, along with many other agencies with their own choppers, can often be seen hovering over D.C. Tonight, though, the skies will be unusually busy due to massive military exercise. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD, is…
The blossoming shrub that was the Washington Redskins’ successful 2005 season bore fruit yesterday, as it was announced that the team will play in the inaugural Monday Night Football game of the 2006 season. The synergy is practically PTI-tastic, as it will also be the first MNF game for area sports curmudgeon Tony Kornheiser. And because Monday Night Football moves from ABC to ESPN this year, nobody will be watching the game without buying something….

Bye Week Buzz Ends as Showdown with Seattle Looms
Coming into this weekend’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, the Redskins have a little to buzz about. Their dramatic, come-from-behind victory in Dallas went a long way in sating fans’ appetites for victories. Santana Moss has put up a pair of fantastic games at wideout. The defense: as good as it gets. And even though the NFC East hasn’t presented a team that’s likely to bring home a championship this year, the division seems poised…
