Crocs Must Be Stopped

If you missed this story in Saturday’s Washington Post, do make sure you check it out, for your own personal safety if nothing else. It seems the enormous popularity of the ugliest shoes on the planet, Crocs, has led to an alarming increase in the number of escalator mishaps on Metro this summer, as the shoes’ soft resin soles can easily be grabbed by the metal teeth of the moving steps. Once trapped, the Crocs,…

Morning Roundup: Long Live the Irony Edition

Welcome back to work, Washington. It’s the Monday after a jam-packed weekend of fun for many of us, and we understand as well as you do that there’s nothing so disheartening as reporting to your desk knowing that good times won’t be in sight again for another five full days. It is therefore in the spirit of distraction that we present to you the weekend’s funniest, and yet saddest headline for you to mull over…

Area’s Road Rage Turns Deadly

Maryland State Police are on the lookout for a green pickup truck after yesterday’s crash on I-270 that killed two people. Officials say Christian Luciano, 28 and Lindsay Bender, 25, both from Harrisburg, Pa., were in a ’98 Sebring when they “began exchanging obscene gestures” with the pickup driver. When the truck swerved in front of the car and hit its breaks, Luciano and Bender ran into the guardrail and were thrown from the…

Morning Roundup: Open and Shut Edition

Good morning, Washington. We really wish we had some good news to share in regards to the local weather forecast, but it’s starting to seem as though the more often we refresh the weather page, the worse the predictions actually get. So new rule this morning. We’ll only talk about kittens and lollipops and pretty pretty ribbons until we get at least two days in a row with sunshine. Our strategy is clear: annoy the…

Morning Roundup: More Than Meets the Eye Edition

It’s always tough to wake up early and get these first posts of the day done and up on the site, but it’s even tougher when confronted with a redesign of washingtonpost.com without warning. You start to wonder whether you might still be asleep, or if you’re becoming old before your time, since nothing is where you expect it to be. But then you get a few good sips off of your first cup of…

Farragut North is ON FIRE!

No, really, Farragut North is on fire. At least the tracks are, according to a WMATA service advisory. This is the third fire at the station in the last week and the second in as many days, once again delaying the commutes of many area workers and raising safety concerns over the troubled transit agency. New Metro General Manager John B. Catoe must be wondering if his $300,000 salary is worth all these headaches this…

More Fire at Farragut North?

What’s going on at the Farragut North Metro station? Last Friday there was a small fire that, while dealt with quickly, caused delays for many commuters on the coldest day of the year. And now, just five days later, there’s report of more smoke coming out of the same station, and a WMATA service alert (that looks to have just been taken down) of more delays on the Glenmont-bound Red Line due to “an emergency…

Morning Roundup: The Nonstate of Play Edition

Hey Washington, are you suddenly feeling cheerier than usual this morning, without knowing for sure why? Well check it out: Congressional Democrats have gone ahead and returned to a rules change that allows nonstate representatives to vote on amendments. The nonstates included in the rule, which was also in place from 1993-1995, are American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Now it’s on to getting full voting rights!…

Holy Huge Salary, Batman!

Because we simply can’t get enough of salary talk, today the Post tells us that Metro’s presumptive new head honcho, John B. Catoe Jr., will be taking in $300,000 a year, not to mention a $60,000 living allowance, a company car, and all the free Metro rides he can take. While it seems a little on the steep side for a public servant working for an agency notorious for its mismanagement of public funds, Catoe…

Morning Roundup: New Metro Manager Edition

Well, D.C. How’s your Emergency Tuesday shaping up so far? It looks like there’s some more exciting Emergency Legislation on the table for the D.C. City Council this morning. Apart from the pay raises we mentioned yesterday, the council’s agenda for the day includes a total of, yes really, 40 emergency bills, including another that would provide for exemptions to the liquor license law that currently prohibits anyone from selling liquor within 400 feet of…
