Video: Rooftop Violinist Serenades D.C. Grocery Shoppers

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, passersby and shoppers exiting the Harris Teeter supermarket at 1631 Kalorama Road NW stopped to gawk at an unexpected musical performance—a rooftop violinist.

DCSnacks Expands Borders

Perhaps someone is listening to DCist commenters. Local food and other stuff delivery service DCSnacks.com has expanded its delivery area, which now covers most of downtown and Dupont but will soon go as far east as 3rd Street NW and as far north as Kalorama Road and V Street. Looking at their delivery map, available on their FAQ, we notice that they stop just short of a steep hill along 13th Street that climbs from…

Sweet Relief Coming for Greater Adams Morgan

File this under “obvious.” Getting into and out of Adams Morgan can be a baffling ordeal for the navigationally challenged. Whether you’re a newcomer to D.C. (finding your way by that helpful grid system you’ve heard so much about), or an out-of-towner detraining at Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams-Morgan (expecting Adams Morgan to be right there), it’s easy to suffer some sort of temporary mental breakdown. And everyone knows that parking is nowhere to be found and that…

Morning Roundup: Brownback and Daffodils Edition

Good morning, Washington. This photo is from KimTheWolf who posted the shot of a bed of yellow daffodils near the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 25th Street NW in DCist Photos. Although temperatures will be pleasant approaching 70 degrees, Capital Weather says that for Sunday, temperatures will be “downright chilly” in the low 50s. Kansas Senator Warns D.C. to Watch Its Step: Sen. Sam Brownback, the Kansas Republican who chairs the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on…

Park Across from Chinese Embassy Closed

This post will probably get DCist on some sort of Internet no-no list in the People’s Republic of China … Oh well. It’s no Tiananmen Square, but the small public park in front of the Chinese Embassy at Connecticut Avenue and Kalorama Road, has been an important venue for protesters over the years. When this DCist was still in elementary school, we saw the first protest we can ever remember. Around the time of the…

Reminder: Blogorama Is Tonight

We should have put out a notice earlier on this (forgive us, Mr. Sanchez), but if you’re a blogger or blog fan and find yourself near the corner of 18th Street and Kalorama Road in Adams Morgan tonight, you should totally check out Blogorama, one of the best blogger gatherings that apparently is being revived after a long siesta. It’s at 7 p.m. at Rendezvous Cafe on 18th Street. Go check it out….

Tryst to Turn Off WiFi on Weekend Evenings

Popular Adams Morgan coffee shop/bar Tryst is planning to turn off their free WiFi at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. We noticed the news on local blog prod & ponder, who thought it was “really disturbing” and even called to double check. “That makes perfect sense,” said one former server at Tryst we know. “I wouldn’t bring a laptop to Adam’s Morgan on a Friday or Saturday. They don’t want people to sit…

Peeking Around D.C.’s Blogs

This DCist is home sick today with a splitting headache, bad cough and congested sinuses. We would try to rest more, but we can’t get much sleep because of low-flying helicopters over our apartment. Despite being bed-ridden, we’re very thankful for laptop computers. So we thought we’d take care of some minor housekeeping and update some of our links to D.C.-area blogs we’ve been looking at as of late. — The Upstate Life … We…

Trader Joe’s Coming to D.C.

The West End Guide reports that Trader Joe’s, the gourmet Los Angeles-based grocery chain, is set to open its first location in the District by 2006. Trader Joe’s is eyeing the old Columbia Hospital site in the West End, which is being converted to retail and residential use. Anticipating Trader Joe’s arrival, the team from the WEG did a market basket survey to compare Trader Joe’s prices with those at the Social and Watergate Safeways,…
