The Weekly Feed: More on the Hill

Since DCist’s resident gastronaut Kanishka Gangopadhyay is off to St. Louis this week for work-related business, he delegated the weekly task of food commentary and critique to someone with an un-trained, un-sophisticated palette. After all, he wouldn’t want someone one-upping him, would he? Much like last week, Capitol Hill seems to have cornered the market for food-related news. Barracks Row Dine Around: Barracks Row, the newly-renovated and ever-so-hip stretch of Eighth Street SE, is celebrating…

Weekend Picks: From the Road

FROSTBURG, Md. — From the DCist mobile command center on I-68, we present to you our picks for stuff you should do this weekend. (Actually, we did this early this morning, we think we’ll be around Frostburg around lunchtime. But wouldn’t it be cool if we did have a mobile command center? C’mon Jake, can you spare a few pennies for that? We promise we won’t take it on any joyrides …) Anyhow, with Catherine…

‘A Venue’ We’ve Seen Somewhere Before

(Written by Kanishka Gangopadhyay and Catherine Andrews. All photos by Catherine Andrews) Just south of the convention center and north of Mt. Vernon Square is a fairly dismal block of real estate occupied by a venerable leather bar and a Morrocan restaurant. On Friday the two welcomed an unlikely new neighbor, Avenue — the latest entry into the District’s “velvet rope” scene. Tempted by the promise of an open bar, a few DCists stopped…

IndeBleu’s Opening Wows Eyes, Palate

(Written by Mike Grass and Kanishka Gangopadhyay) It was perhaps one of most lavish non-political parties Washington has seen in quite some time. The much talked about opening of IndeBleu on Saturday evening saw limos pulling up on G Street, photographers deployed to the entryway, all the while champagne greeted guests at coat check and at least one woman, painted as a forest nymph, walked about the place in A Midsummer Night’s Dream-esque fashion….

Gun Ban Repeal Delayed

(By DCist contributor Kanishka Gangopadhyay) Opponents of more firearms in the District can breath easier today. The Post reports yesterday that the proposed repeal of the D.C. gun ban in the Senate has been set aside. The repeal was attached to the DC operating budget, which is one of the few pieces of legislation that must be enacted before Congress adjourns for the fall elections. Senator Larry E Craig (R-Idaho) withdrew his proposed budget amendment…

Go Green This Weekend

(From DCist contributor Kanishka Gangopadhyay) If you’re looking for something to do on this rainy weekend in D.C., you might think about putting on your finest hemp clothing and attending the DC Green Festival being held at the Washington convention center. A joint project of Global Exchange and Co-Op America, the Green Festivals are a two-day party with a serious purpose: to accelerate the emergence of a new economic paradigm that is life-affirming, inclusive and…

Hilton on the Hill?

(From DCist contributor Kanishka Gangopadhyay) It seems that D.C. has had two reality show-related rumors in the last week. First, the rumors of the Real World coming to D.C. began circulating again thanks to an E! column, but they were quickly debunked. Now, Roll Call reports (website access is for subscribers only) that Fox producers have approached congressional leaders in an effort to procure internships for Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, stars of the network’s…

Buy A Tree for 9/11

(By DCist contributor Kanishka Gangopadhyay) Planning is underway for the first of nine memorial tree groves to be planted around the city in commemoration of the victims of 9/11. The memorial groves project is D.C.’s participation in the U.S. Forest Service’s Living Memorials Project. D.C. officials are planning to plant commemorative trees in each of the city’s wards, with a central site on Kingman Island in the Anacostia River. The first grove will be at…
