Sh*t Happens: Regrettable Twitter Typo Changes Story in Apparent Suicide of Maryland Murder Suspect

Local ABC affiliate WJLA made quite the typo in alerting its Twitter followers that the suspect in a Montgomery County shooting death had taken his own life.

Go Home Already: Focus Pocus

>> Sure, meters are great, but what about getting D.C. taxi drivers to use their rooftop lights like cabs in every other city? [NotionsCapital] >> The Quest for Dog Parks: A very rigid search. [Intangible Arts] >> Some D.C. Cab drivers hate Halloween! [WaPo] >> All MARC commuter service out of Union Station on the Brunswick Line has been shut down because of a gas leak in Kensington. [AP/WTOP] >> Vietnam Memorial Visitor Center…

Photo of the Day: August 28, 2007

It was the colors in this photo that caught my eye; they present a nice contrast against the cloudy sky. The low perspective on the shot is also appealing in that it gives the old gas station a sense that it is looming above the street, deserted and monolithic–even though it’s not. The subject is the Kensington Service Center, part of Kensington’s Antique Row, which chip py the photo guy visited on Saturday. I…

About Tonight

>> Since Tuesday is the new Thursday, we’d recommend heading over to Rock and Roll Hotel for a stellar line-up of DJs including Ken and Juan of East Coast Boogiemen, Lexus King, Devin Byrnes of Exit Only, Aaron Sparks and Keenan. 8:30 p.m.- 1:30 a.m., free all night long. >> Montreal’s The Besnard Lakes play with Dirty On Purpose at the Black Cat’s backstage, 9 p.m., $10. If you can’t get enough of the…

Morning Roundup: Long Live the Irony Edition

Welcome back to work, Washington. It’s the Monday after a jam-packed weekend of fun for many of us, and we understand as well as you do that there’s nothing so disheartening as reporting to your desk knowing that good times won’t be in sight again for another five full days. It is therefore in the spirit of distraction that we present to you the weekend’s funniest, and yet saddest headline for you to mull over…

Area Teens Can Distinguish “Swords” From “S-Words”

Caroline Bartman knows her scientists. And her pop culture references. And her U.S. presidents. And her signs of the Zodiac. The DC resident and National Cathedral School senior proved her spanning knowledge of trivia Wednesday night, when she calmly slaughtered two other teen competitors during the Jeopardy Teen Tournament. Bartman barely showed her nerves during the television program (though perhaps it might have been because one of her competitors thought JFK voluntarily chose not…

Reader, Meet Author

Christmas and Hanukkah both drop on 12/25 this year, and as we get closer to that date, retailers of fine books begin to put their energy behind that last big sales push of the year. This means a dearth of author events until we clear Epiphany. All the same, we got the hook-up with what’s out there. MONDAY There are those that say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Yet most of the people…

DCist’s November Theater Preview

DCist apologizes for this month’s theater preview being a bit behind schedule (its resident critic keeps ending up travelling out of state), but there’s no reason to fret, as there’s plenty of interesting options playing at area venues during November. Bunnies: Not just cute like everybody supposes? Or man’s real best friend? The lead character of Vpstart Crow’s production of Harvey would say they fall into the “friend” camp, but everybody just thinks he’s…

What’s Better Than Lobster?

DCist challenges the omnivores among you to refute this statement: Lobster is nature’s perfect food. You can’t, can you? Is it because it reminds us of summer? Because it’s a little bit messy to eat? Or because we can unapologetically dip its sweet, tender flesh in butter? Really it’s all of the above. Unfortunately, lobster is just too hard on the wallet to eat regularly. Thankfully some D.C. chefs have stepped down from the whole…

Presidents Day Weekend Update

We hope you’re enjoying your Presidents Day weekend, especially if you have Monday off from work. Although this photo taken outside the Adams Morgan McDonalds was posted on photogene’s photoblog on Valentine’s Day, we thought it works for this weekend as well since we witnessed a fight spill from the sidewalk to inside the McDonald’s at 18th Street and Columbia Road and then back outside again. The Metropolitan Police officers breaking up the scuffle sure…
