Tracy’s Kids Benefit Nets Famous for D.C.

As momentum builds in Hollywood for the Academy Awards, Tracy’s Kids, a local charitable program for children with cancer, held their own movie-themed gala on Tuesday night. Politicos, corporate honchos, and other benevolent Washington types filled Lucky Strike for a reception before taking the escalator upstairs to the Regal Gallery Place cinemas to see one of six Oscar nominated films….

Five O’Clock Meeting: Bar Louie

Anytime a new bar opens with more than 3 or 4 taps, my ears perk up. I start getting the urge to go check it out, to pay a visit and welcome the new neighbor on the block. Thus, when a Bar Louie opened this summer in the Verizon Center (downstairs from Lucky Strike) with a 20-tap list, I was immediately lured by the siren song of another taphouse in the area. Although the bar…

Morning Roundup: So Close We Can Taste It Edition

Happy Friday, Washington, and welcome to the newly redesigned DCist.com. Yes, our benevolent overlords in New York have been rolling out their new design city-by-city, and today it’s our turn. We’re still getting used to it ourselves, and of course we already know you’ll give us your full and honest opinions in the comments. So go crazy — we’re all halfway there already, and so is the weather forecast today. You might actually need that…

2005: The Year in Review

Today and tomorrow, we’ll be taking the opportunity to look back at the year in D.C. and the year in DCist. We’ll retrieve for you what we’ve determined are the best and most interesting DCist pieces in dining, arts, music, and news. This year we’ve written over two thousand posts (generating over ten thousand comments), and we figured the best way to start the reminiscence was to bring back for you the most read DCist…

Bowling Comes to D.C.

Yesterday evening we headed down to Lucky Strike’s opening night. It was… something. Ever been to a bowling alley with a dress code? Neither had we. This was the damn fanciest-ass night of bowling we’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. Enter the space and you’ll find yourself in a dining area; straight ahead is the bar; to your left is the thunder of the lanes. There are pool tables tucked away somewhere, too. Lucky…

What We’re Missing: A Place to Roll

Editor’s Note: In this very occasional series, we’ve lamented our lack of a quick lube and a dearth of good bagels. Now, we wonder why bowling is so hard to do. Is there something you think D.C. is missing? Let us know. What would DCist do for fun in an ideal world? Oh, the usual. We’d bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback. Sadly, we don’t live in a perfect world, and the truth is…

G’Place to Steal G’town Cinema Goers?

This DCist hasn’t been to the new Regal Cinema 14 multiplex in Gallery Place yet. But from what we’ve seen of its location (adjacent to the MCI Arena and the new Clyde’s), the theater complex is sure to bring in a lot of traffic because of its metrorail accessibility and the retail, dining and entertainment options immediately surrounding it. (The Washington Business Journal reported back on Nov. 12 that Lucky Strike Entertainment will lease a…
