Good Ol’ Reliable Metro
We’re not ones to peddle in rumors and gossip, but this one was worth too much to pass up. The Post’s Reliable Sources reported the following today on Nicole Kidman, in town filming a new alien thriller, which we publish un-edited: The script of “The Visiting” — an alien-epidemic thriller due out next year — called for Kidman’s character to race into the Cleveland Park station, some kind of evil in pursuit, and hop the…

The Troubles With WMATA: Car No. 3115
Photo from the archives of Drew McDermott OK, you may be getting sick and tired of DCist writing about transit. Please blame Jo Becker and Lyndsey Layton and their cohorts at the Post for bringing into the public record so much great information about the ailments of the region’s transit system — ailments we’ve been looking at in one way or another since DCist launched last summer. Crosstown Freeway Questions
Yesterday’s transportation online chat with the Post’s Lyndsey Layton and Steve Ginsberg brought up a number of interesting questions, including one from a person in Annapolis who wondered when there would be some initiative to build a crosstown freeway connecting I-66 from Virginia to Route 50 in Maryland and complete a north-south freeway through Northeast to Prince George’s County. The Post writes that WMATA says that an increase in ridership has created a “growing dissatisfaction among riders, who say they can’t rely on the rail system to reach their destinations on time.” So what else is new? What…

WMATA Details ‘Citizen Corps’ Plans
If there is an emergency in a metrorail tunnel and commuters need to be evacuated, a member of the new Metro Citizen Corps may guide their way to safety. That is of course, there happens to be a Citizen Corps member — or as DCeiver said yesterday, the “Junior Varsity version of the Guardian Angels” — at the scene of an emergency. WMATA today released details on its new program that in theory, will aid…

Red Line Blues
DCist doesn’t get over much to the eastern leg of the Red Line. Beyond Union Station, places like Brookland-CUA, Forest Glen and Glenmont, seem like far-off magical places. We’ve heard of Silver Spring (apparently there is some sort of rebirth going on there) and Wheaton has the longest set of escalators in the Western Hemisphere. While DCist and countless other regular Red Line passengers have been complaining about delays on WMATA’s heaviest traveled subway line,…
