The day was joyful at times and somber at others — and it was fraught for longtime residents and organizers here in D.C., who lack representation in Congress — and who often feel disconnected from nationally-focused events.

Fifty-seven years ago, thousands of people took to the National Mall for the first March on Washington. This year’s event looked different, with changes like temperature checks, social distancing, and all that comes with hosting a mass gathering during a global pandemic.
