The change follows a a federal judge’s ruling earlier this week that deemed the CDC’s masking requirements on public transportation unlawful. WMATA and other local transit systems have also eliminated masking requirements.

Free kid-sized KN95 masks will be available in all eight wards starting this week.

The masks will be distributed through local health departments, state-run testing and vaccination sites, nursing homes, and community groups.

Before the threshold is reached, masks will be required in public indoor spaces only after the county experiences seven consecutive days of “substantial” COVID-19 transmission.

WMATA is part of the agencies that must follow the recently extended Transportation Security Administration mandate.

Teachers’ unions and many parents are on board with the safety precautions, which come only weeks before schools reopen to students.

A city mask audit was conducted from Nov. 18 to Dec. 9 in 151 locations across all eight wards.

Now, DCHA is attempting to get the suit dismissed.

Earlier this week, the city imposed a 14-day self-quarantine requirement for people traveling to Washington from states deemed as “high-risk” by health department officials.

“We hope that people take one as they see fit and hopefully everyone self-polices,” General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said.
