It’s a cut above the rest.

Two U.S. senators lunched at a local BBQ joint this afternoon as a means to protest a USDA promotion of non-meat alternatives on Mondays.

D.C. public school officials confirmed today that the city’s school system does not use the ammonia-treated ground beef known as “pink slime.”

Nate Anda, who has specialized in pushing the envelope of the everyday protein, is currently readying to take the next leap: into the brick-and-mortar business. Red Apron’s 709 D Street NW storefront should open in a few months, and it’ll be, well, everything a meat-lover could possibly want.

“You don’t win friends with salad,” said Homer Simpson. This week, plenty of restaurants will be trying to win people over with plenty of meat.

Last year, to the bewilderment of many a west coast transplant, the District was named as the country’s most “veg-friendly” city. As it turns out, we appear to have defended that title, at least to a certain extent.

The District’s neighborhood listservs provide one particularly valuable service to jittery residents: they’re searchable repositories of suspicious activity. Shady newspaper salespeople, magazine peddlers, people dressed as utility technicians — just a sample of the alleged scam artists who prowl the city’s residential streets in search of their next victim. Recently though, we’ve noticed another class of accused scammer popping up on the listservs: the guy who sells meat out of a van — who some residents aren’t just afraid will swindle their money, but perhaps also their digestive health.
