Five Guys Opens in Midtown; NY Grinds to Halt

We missed this when it happened a couple of weeks ago, but is it really ever too late to point and laugh at New Yorkers? We didn’t think so. So, people are probably aware that Five Guys franchises are proliferating across the Eastern U.S. like nuclear weapons in central Asia. The greasy, peanut-laden fingers of our locally born burger stand have spread as far as Delafield, Wisconsin; Nashville, Tennessee; and Miami, Florida. They’ve even broken…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it’s important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too – two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the…

Pearlstein to Inviting Streetscapes: Drop Dead!

You have to give Steven Pearlstein credit. Live Largo.” Yup, Largo Town Center, the Blue Line’s new terminus station. The developers explained that thanks to “great access to work and play” and a “myriad of amenities” there was “nowhere else…

The Late Senator, Property Moguls and Train Stations

President Bush in his most recent State of the Union address said that he wanted to support the development of an “ownership society” where every American stands to benefit from the pride of owning something, whether it be a strong investment portfolio or a ranch with lots of brush to clear. In New York, D.C., and elsewhere, this ownership society includes the giant real estate conglomerates that hold a great deal of power in how…

World Bank, IMF Under New Terror Threat

The Department of Homeland Security has named five buildings it believes could be targeted in a new wave terrorist attacks. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says that credible information indicates that the headquarters for the World Bank and International Monetary Fund are targets. The buildings are adjacent to one another, just two blocks from the White House, on Pennsylvania Avenue at H Street, between 18th and 20th streets. The Post is reporting today that…
