The city’s newest memorial honoring the presidential and military legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower has finally opened after two decades of creative disagreements and nearly being halted.

“It’s time to take down monuments that memorialize the intended subservience of black people in this country,” the petition says.

The legislation comes as the region prepares to honor the lives of the five journalists killed last year in a brutal attack on the Capital Gazette newsroom.
