Opposition Continues to Live Nation in Silver Spring
A Post business columnist and an independent music non-profit have joined the chorus questioning Live Nation’s proposal for a Silver Spring music hall. Last Friday, Steven Pearlstein wrote that while I.M.P. boss Seth Hurwitz has fought against competition for his 9:30 Club before, and his alternative proposal to Live Nation is in his own best interest, “he’s put forward a financial proposal attractive enough that county officials cannot ignore it.” Under their non-binding letter of…

MLK Memorial a Few Beats Closer to Reality
Preservation of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is something we’ve discussed on DCist a number of times before — usually in reference to the library and street that share his name. One thing the city’s still missing is a memorial to the civil rights hero. The memorial’s design was approved in 2005, with the remaining hurdle that plagues so many projects of this nature: money. Fundraisers have been hard at work…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
The nicer the weather gets, the busier we get across the Ist-A-Verse. But we like being busy. Here’s a peek at what we’ve been up to since last week! Chicagoist had an interview with Audrey Niffenegger, whose popular book, The Time Traveler’s Wife, was based in their fine city. They also had a heated discussion about Rush Limbaugh’s controversial Barack Obama parody, talked about whether Uncle Julio’s Hacienda is a good place to get…

Photo of the Day: April 25, 2007
Sometimes you see something many times without really noticing it. That was the case with the 9:30 Club in this photo by Eye Captain, whose recent shots have a lot of great colors. We like how the first floor doors and windows are the same color as the sky. The view of the club also gives a better idea of what it used to be – the WUST Radio Music Hall….

Exploring the Roots of Modernism
Written by DCist contributor Genevieve Smith. Tucked away in an upstairs corner at the Phillips Collection, two remarkable little watercolors, barely bigger than postcards, depict early experimentations into abstraction, decades before abstract art would really take hold in Europe. Washes of color dance across the page of Arthur Melville’s Dancers at the Moulin Rouge (at right), but the forms do not so much as hint at the shape of actual dancers. Instead, the bursts of…
He is a writer, writer of fictions. He is the heart that you call home. He is Colin Meloy, front man for The Decemberists who wrapped up his solo tour this past Saturday with a sold out show at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria. Tables filled up early with a diverse age range and variations on the dark-rimmed glasses typically worn by Colin, while others sat cross-legged in front of the stage like children…

DCist Interview: Laura Burhenn
(Interview by DCist contributor Colleen Clark) Laura Burhenn is playing tonight at DC9 with Metrosexuals and The Guins, and May 19 at the Black Cat backstage. You can listen to some of her mp3s here. Local musician Laura Burhenn’s song, “Helicopters,” first fell into our hands on a mixtape from an old colleague. We joked that it was the lost song from the “Garden State” soundtrack (and we mean that in a good way, in…
