D.C. Ward Escapes From Custody For Third Time
D.C. officials just cannot keep their grip on Brandon Sparrow — the 18-year-old ward of the District has now escaped from city custody for the third time.
More details are coming to light in the violent escape of a teenager from New Beginnings Youth Correctional Facility in Laurel on Sunday night — and, as expected, the incident is causing many to question the overall efficacy of the facility and the capability of the District’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services to manage it.

Teenager Escapes From New Beginnings
D.C. and Maryland police are searching for a youth that escaped from the New Beginnings Youth Correctional Facility in Laurel late last night. Around midnight, WUSA9 reports, a teenager assaulted a corrections officer, stole his security card and car keys, then used a ladder to scale a fence and drove off in the officer’s vehicle. (A second teenager that was part of the escape plot was caught.)
Yesterday, news broke that Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) had introduced an amendment to a defense bill that would have forced the move of the District’s New Beginnings Youth Development Center — our 60-bed youth detention facility — from its current location in Laurel to a plot of land on the existing Walter Reed Army Medical Center which will be turned over to the city for re-development next year. Without the move, Cardin warned, he’d stop the city from getting a 62.5-acre parcel that will be re-developed into retail space, residences, offices, and even two charter schools.
