Rumble, D.C. Election Style

We can hear it now — a deep-voiced announcer, standing on a darkened stage. The air, thick with tension. He begins: For months they have danced around each other, engaging in verbal jousting like the determined enemies that they are. But tonight it ends. Tonight, and only tonight, they face each other. Only one will remain standing. Are you ready to RUMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEE?????? Standing strong in black trunks in this corner is the young challenger,…

Morning Roundup: Rainy Day Monday Edition

In the 70’s, Karen Carpenter sang that “Rainy Days and Mondays” always got her down. Well, this would chart as a real downer, as today combines the two. On a cheerier note, Saturday morning I took in the unveiling of Cultural DC’s Shaw Heritage Trail, which included a fabulous performance by the Shiloh Baptist Church choir and had a great turn-out from the community; check out the Trail, and the local Shaw businesses, sometime in…

Cab Fares on the Rise

After a long night out, sometimes the biggest relief is a quick cab ride home — no waiting 17 minutes for the Green Line train, no running after a bunch of 30’s buses as they pull away from your stop. That relief is soon to be a little more expensive. According to News Channel 8, the D.C. Taxicab Commission has endorsed a series of cost increases that could make that one zone trip 18 percent…

Sloppy Seconds for the Wash. Times?

The lipstick hasn’t even dried from the Washington Post’s kiss off of a Pentagon-organized march commemorating Sept. 11, and the Washington Times already has stepped in to sponsor Freedom Walk. “We offered to help with free advertising,” Dick Amberg, general manager and vice president of the Times, told Editor and Publisher. “It seems like a very reasonable thing to do in terms of public service.” The Washington Post announced Aug. 15 that it backed…

Post Drops Pentagon March Sponsorship

Good news for those who were a bit wary of the Post colluding with faux-country artist Clint Black (oh, and parterning with the administration on a government-sponsored march supporting the military and the war) — the Post announced today that it is dropping its plans to promote the Freedom Walk, set to take place September 11 on the Mall:”As it appears that this event could become politicized, The Post has decided to honor the…

The Yin to Operation Ceasefire’s Yang

For those out there who hate Thievery Corporation and Ted Leo but love freedom, the Pentagon is offering an alternative to Operation Ceasefire. None other than country music legend Clint Black will headline a concert in support of the military and Sept. 11 victims on the four-year anniversary of the attacks. The concert, named “America Supports You,” will follow up the Department of Defense’s two-mile Freedom Walk from the Pentagon to Arlington National Cemetery to…

Pandas Becoming ‘Extinct’

Oh what wit News Channel 8 has. They made a cute endangered species joke this afternoon in reference to Pandamania, the massive public sidewalk art project. The pandas are becoming “extinct.” Crews are rounding up the statues from District sidewalks and bringing them to a holding facility where they are being prepared for auction. But there was at least one panda stolen this year. This panda was taken from Connecticut Avenue….
