Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Banner week for SFist as the site’s new editor introduced himself — hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF’s mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist’s readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with “open mic…

Thief Foiled by Lawmaker With Strength of 20 Big Men

Who ever said members of Congress never do anything for our fair city? The Associated Press reports that 61-year-old Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R – NJ) was approached by a group of young men in Georgetown last night when he felt someone grab his wallet from behind. But when Rodney Frelinghuysen comes face to face with crime, he doesn’t back down. Instead, he eats a banana, and an amazing transformation occurs. Frelinghuysen IS Bananaman! The seven-term…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

With all that went down this week, we thought we thought we’d cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions this week at DCist. Like the rest of country, we were floored by the news of so many dead coming out of Virginia Tech, and with so many of the victims and their relatives from the D.C. area, we felt it important to pay…

In Memoriam

We’re continuing to update the list of 32 people killed in Monday’s massacre, as those names are confirmed by the Associated Press. The Post has some touching profiles of some of the victims. Wizards Face Tough Stretch

What was once an entertaining season for the Washington Wizards has quickly gone down the proverbial drain so fast most people are afraid to ask “What’s next?” In the last 12 days, the team has lost Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas for the season, lost the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, lost the Southeast Division crown to the Miami Heat and also lost six in a row, with four of those…

Idolizing D.C.

Though we can’t all claim to be following this season of American Idol ourselves, the show’s ratings tell us that at least a few of you probably are. So what do we care? Well, one of our own has made it to the top 24 this season, the show’s fifth. Antonella Barba isn’t a D.C. native — she’s originally from Point Pleasant, NJ, but she’s been calling this city home for the past few years….

Morning Roundup: Life on the Street Edition

Greetings, Washington. Welcome to yet another shortened work week. With no less than three abbreviated work weeks (four for some) in the past month, the prospect of an unmitigated series of five-dayers looms large. So enjoy a back-to-work Tuesday while you can, but don’t forget to wear a coat. That’s right, January really is a winter month and today will see temps drop throughout the day accompanied by blustery winds, remnants of the deadly winter…

D.C. Continues Fall Down Dangerous Cities List

It’s that time of year again, when D.C. residents brace for the annual rankings of the Most Dangerous Cities. But don’t cringe just yet, because amid crime emergencies, ubiquitous shootings and terrifying police impersonators — not to mention Fox News style headlines — we’ve actually continued our slide down this disreputable list. D.C. now ranks as the nineteenth most dangerous city, sliding six slots from number 13 last year. The rankings are based on 2005…

Just What the Doc Ordered

Think nonfiction is a dish best served on celluloid? Then you’ll want to take note of a number of unique opportunities to catch these screenings of new documentary films in the area.
